PLAINVILLE – PARC’s 15th Annual Helen Coughlin Walk, set for this Saturday, Oct. 3 at Norton Park, has been postponed because of anticipated rain. The event has been rescheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17.
William “Al” Johnson, a 100-year-old Plainville resident, will take the place of honor as grand marshal of this major fundraiser for PARC, the Plainville-based organization that offers family centered services for people with developmental disabilities.
This year, the walkathon will honor survivors, acknowledging them for their strength, perseverance, fortitude and joy for life in spite of adversity. The walkathon is the largest annual fundraiser for this non-profit which has offered healthy living activities and life-skills education for more than 50 years. Other honorees include Jane Mecure, co-founder of PARC, and Diane Kraut, who has donated 30-plus years of service to the organization.
Registration will begin at 9 a.m., with opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. with a color guard, followed by the walk. Festivities will include music, a chili cook-off and chance to win gift items while supporting an important cause. Walkers can register for $25 per person and $10 for students. Teams, businesses and individuals are welcome. Those who bring a canned good to benefit the Plainville Community Food Pantry will receive a ticket to enter the gift item giveaway. Recyclable cans and bottles will also be collected.
